When a child has a fever, giving the correct dose is what matters most. A dosing mistake is one of the most common errors at home and it can be dangerous.
Dose by weight
Whenever it is known, use the child’s weight to decide the amount. If you do not know it, age can be used as a reference. Too much acetaminophen can damage the liver; too little does not control the fever well.
Basic safety rules
- Do not give acetaminophen or any other medicine to a child under 2 years old without checking with a pediatrician first.
- For children under 12, the dose can be repeated every 4 hours while symptoms last, with no more than 5 doses in 24 hours.
- Measure with the syringe or dosing device intended for the product. Never use kitchen spoons.
Pediatric products
Formulations made for children, such as MEJORALITO, are designed for pediatric dosing. Always check the label and follow the dose indicated for age and weight.
When to call a doctor right away
If a baby 3 months old or younger has a rectal temperature of 100.4 °F (38 °C) or higher, seek medical care immediately without waiting. If you have any doubt about the dose, ask your pediatrician or pharmacist.
